Customizing the Canvas Dashboard

The Canvas Dashboard is the first thing you will see when you log into Canvas. The Dashboard helps you see what is happening in all your current courses.

Open Dashboard

To open or return to the dashboard at any time click the dashboard button in the left navigation menu.

View Dashboard

The dashboard is your landing page in Canvas. The dashboard has three views - Card View, List View, and Recent Activity. The view can changed by clicking on the 3 dot button (pictured below).mceclip2.png

  • Card View - displays course cards for quick access to all your favorite courses (these courses also display in the Courses button in the left navigation menu).
  • List View - displays all course to-do items in an agenda view.
  • Recent Activity View - displays all recent activity for all courses.

View University Announcements

DSU will add announcements from time to time concerning reminders from the Registrar, events on campus, and etc. These announcements are published for all students by adding them to Canvas. They will appear at the top of the dashboard and remain there until the users close them or until the announcement expires. If a user has closed an announcement but wants to revisit it the announcement can be found in the Account button under Global Announcements. mceclip3.png

Sidebar Course Items (To-Do)

The sidebar helps you see what you need to do next and what feedback you've received across all your courses. However, assignments that are not graded or do not require an online submission only display until the due date.

The To Do section shows up to seven items with due dates or event dates in the upcoming weeks, including ungraded quizzes, assignments that do not require a Canvas submission, and course announcements [1]. Each item in the To Do list displays the assignment name, the course name, the number of points, and the due date for the assignment. Once the due date has passed, items remain in this section for four weeks.

The Recent Feedback section shows assignments with feedback from your instructor during the last four weeks [2].

Note: Assignments submitted through Canvas disappear automatically from the To Do list; no-submission assignments (submitted on paper/in class) can only be removed from the list manually.
